Identify your Data Science-able Problem – Rachel Wells

Do you want to use data science to improve your organization’s work, but you’re not sure where to start? Engage in a live workshop with DataKind’s Scoping Squad at Good Tech Fest! The most challenging part of executing on a data science problem is defining the problem statement collaboratively with both data science and social good professionals. This workshop will walk you through applying DataKind’s approach to scoping data science projects, giving you the opportunity to design your own data science for good proposals in breakout groups facilitated by data science experts. DataKind has completed over 300 data for good projects worldwide, and our team will use this experience to walk you through how to write problem statements that ensure ethical innovation. You’ll learn how social sector leaders and data science partners can collaborate to develop better programs and scale benefits for greater impact in the communities we serve through a project scoping process. This workshop is your opportunity to brainstorm project ideas with DataKind’s brilliant team of data science expert volunteers trained in scoping data science and AI for social good projects. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have the tools to identify your data science-able problem, map it to your organization’s theory of change, and articulate all this in a way that’ll resonate with both data scientists and social actors.
